My former manager, Ken, was “sidemoted” from my boss to a system engineer, a position he was even less suited for than manager. He was to engineer a project that my team was to build, but we ended up doing all of his engineering work for him - no big surprises here.
At the end of the project, he came by and asked us if we preferred donuts or bagels, common in the office for rewarding good behavior.
“Bagels!” we all said.
The next day, I arrived at work to find a lone bagel sitting on a napkin on my desk. My other two co-workers had the same thing. Ken had gone to Panera Bread and bought a dozen bagels, dropped off three in my office for my team and completely ignoring the other two teams that work with us in the same room, and took the remainder of the bagels to his office for his colleagues.
