I have 3-4 per day, and at least one runs long, 90 minutes or more. And that’s scheduled meetings. There’s still plenty of “can you come by for a minute?” impromptus that last much more than a minute.
joinme: How long do you think your meetings need to be / how long are they typically?
MeetingBoy: Most meetings should be less than 30 minutes, and could be done in 15. Brainstorms and strategy can go longer.
Canceled meetings are like an oasis in the desert. Two of my favorite tweets of mine are:
- “You had me at meeting canceled.”
- “4 meetings in a row, then later no doubt a meeting with my boss about how I’m not getting anything done.”
That 2nd one was real. The first was based on the time someone started profusely apologizing for cancelling their meeting. I told them I should be thanking them!
from chat:
Viewer106: Shorter meetings mean more shorter meetings in the future…to cover teh crap that was left out.
MeetingBoy: Not if people get to the point!
Still, justme: I set a meeting when I want to take an extended lunch.
Timah: How many meetings did you guys have to produce this PowerPoint and coffee break?
MeetingBoy: I didn’t do anything. Maggie had to do all the work. I just show up and be me. Surly, bitter, recalcitrant, sarcastic me.

We have, as of late, greatly reduced the number of meetings at our company. This may be directly related to having our CEO position open. In other news, we are 90% more productive and 100% more collaborative. These things are directly related.
